You can expect the unexpected when it comes to the high school soccer playoffs. That's exactly what happened Tuesday night. The George County Rebels traveled to Gulfport in the Class 6A boys confrontation. In the end George County pulled a 2-1 upset to advance to play at Oak Grove on Saturday.
Ocean Springs received a wake up call having to pull out a 2-1 overtime win over the Biloxi Indians. The Greyhounds advance to play Brandon in Ocean Springs at 3 p.m on Saturday.
The Ocean Springs Lady Greyhounds shutout Biloxi 2-0 and will entertain Oak Grove 1 p.m. Saturday. The Gulfport Lady Admirals beat St. Martin on a pair of goals off the foot of Alexis Arnoult. The Lady Admirals travel to Brandon on Saturday.
In the 5A ranks, the Long Beach Bearcats used a goal by Kai Vancourt and a penalty kick by Dylan Picchi to defeat Picayune 2-1 and advance into the second round against West Jones.
The Long Beach girls posted a 3-0 win over Stone and will meet South Jones on Saturday.
West Harrison girls blanked Hattiesburg 2-0. Megan Sexton had a big night for the Lady Canes. Her assist to Haley Kim propelled West Harrison to a 1-0 lead in the first-half. With about four minutes remaining before halftime, Sexton scored the Lady Canes final goal. West Harrison will meet West Jones in the second round.
The West Harrison boys defeated defending 5A state champion Stone 1-0 and will face South Jones on Saturday.
Defending 4A State Champion St. Stanislaus cruised under the win column with a decisive 9-1 victory over Clarkdale in the Bay. Ismael Khouma netted four goals on the night as the Rockachaws travel to West Lauderdale on Saturday.
The Bay High Tigers took care of business with a 5-0 decision over East Central. The Tigers are slated to play Northeast Jones 7:30 Friday night in the second round.
The Bay High Lady Tigers beat East Central 3-1 and will entertain West Lauderdale in the second round.
The Pass Christian Lady Pirates got the job done on Tuesday. Pass Christian beat Greene County in an offensive showdown 5-3 to advance to face Northeast Jones.
Defending 1A/2A/3A state champion St. Patrick scored at will Tuesday night. When the time expired, the Fighting Irish scored 12 goals while Clarkdale could muster one. Before the game coach Mario Camps told WLOX that he felt his team had momentum and it showed as Eiland Stebly netted 5 goals and Tyler Musical scored 4 goals. St. Patrick will meet St. Joseph on Saturday.
OLA advanced into the second round. The Crescents slipped past Clarkdale 2-1.
Resurrection boys and girls weren't so lucky. Sacred Heart beat the Eagles 5-0 and clipped the Lady Eagles 7-0.
