Apparent tornado hits Hattiesburg; tornado threat still includes coast

HATTIESBURG, MS (WLOX) - Severe weather hammered South Mississippi overnight. An apparent tornado touched down in Hattiesburg. According to Raycom Media partner WDAM, the twister hit near fire station number two.east of Highway 49. Damage can also be seen on the William Carey College campus in Hattiesburg. Toppled trees and downed power lines litter Arledge and Duke Roads near the Hattiesburg Police Department. Reporters in that area indicate an assortment of buildings got torn apart as the overnight weather spun through the Pine Belt.

Along the coast, fog remains an issue. At 4:45 a.m., rain began falling in Pearl River and Hancock Counties. Wind gusts also picked up. The six coastal counties remain under a tornado watch until 7:00 a.m. "We'll get strong winds, a lot of lightning and heavy rain from now through about 8:00 a.m.," meteorologist Andrew Wilson explained.
