JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

A star St. Martin football player is in the hospital recovering from a gunshot wound.

Coaches say 18-year-old senior Caleb Reddix was shot Wednesday night. He was later found in the passenger seat of a car at the park and ride on Washington Avenue in Ocean Springs.

WLOX News Now confirmed through two sources that the weapon likely used in the shooting was thrown into a pond at the Brittany boat ramp off Lemoyne Boulevard in St. Martin.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell says the circumstances surrounding the shooting are suspicious.

"[The] firearm was not there that night, which raised questions it's suspicious circumstances," said Ezzell.

DMR divers are actively searching for the gun to determine if the shooting was self-inflicted, or if someone else fired the weapon.

Reddix is expected to be released from the hospital in the next few days.
