GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - An autopsy is scheduled for Friday morning on the body of a man killed Thursday night after being hit by a Gulfport police car on Highway 49.

According to Sgt. Joshua Bromen with the Gulfport Police Department, the accident occurred around 6 p.m., near Walmart by Airport Road.

Gulfport resident Kristin Lott says the victim had just ordered his final meal.

"Nice guy, gentlemen, always rings bell for us every time he leaves out," said Lott, who was cleaning a table as she watched the man walk across the grass and into the road. "The man, he just came out of Arby's ordering food. Police going 70 miles per hour did not see the man," said Lott.

Though officials have not said how fast the officer was driving, multiple witnesses say the vehicle did not have its flashing emergency lights on at the time.

Tamika Lewis watched as the officer who hit the man tried to save his life.

"The man got out the truck and looked to see what he hit, started doing CPR on him," said Lewis. "He covered his body up."

An investigation is being led by the Biloxi Police Department and Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove. Officials will only confirm that the victim is a 54-year-old man. An identity will be released once the family is notified.
