SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - The Mississippi Highway patrol staffing has fallen to a level some consider critical. 25% of the state trooper positions are vacant. That's about 160 positions.
The problem is a required state trooper school has not been approved by the state legislature, therefore normal attrition has left the highway patrol with a shortage of troopers.
Just like the other state agencies, not every position should be filled at all times, when the state faces financial difficulties. But the size of the state trooper force has fallen to a point that it is time to hire.
We agree with the Governor's plan to approve a new trooper academy and hire more state troopers. It's a matter of public safety.
