CALAVERAS COUNTY, CA (RNN) - A sequoia tree that had a tunnel cut through it in the 1880s has been knocked down by a storm over the weekend.

The Calaveras Big Trees Association posted pictures of the fallen sequoia, called the Pioneer Cabin tree, on Facebook. The tree was located in Calaveras Big Trees State Park, northeast of Stockton in California's Central Valley, and was part of the Big Trees Trail.

Park volunteer Jim Allday noticed the fallen tree Sunday afternoon.

The tree was hollowed out in the late 1800s so people could pass through as a tourist draw, but was alive at the time of its collapse.

Cars passed through it in the past, but most recently, only hikers were allowed to pass through, SFGate reported.

Joan Allday said the tree had appeared to be in failing health for several years, leaning to one side, she told SFGate.

Sequoia trees, which grow in a specific area along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada, can live up to 3,000 years. Trees are usually around 250 feet tall, and branches can be up to 8 feet in diameter. The tree trunk can reach up to 20 feet in diameter with bark up to 3 feet thick.
