Malfunctioning sensor in HVAC system may have set off alarms in Gulfport office building

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The Stifel Nicolaus office building in Downtown Gulfport was evacuated Tuesday morning after an employee smelled smoke. Members of the Gulfport Fire Department could be seen on the roof of the building, searching for the source of the smoke odor, but there was no smoke showing on the outside of the building.

Fire Chief Michael Beyerstedt said a malfunctioning sensor in the heating and cooling system may have set off fire alarms in the building.

The three-story building on 26th Avenue is home to several offices, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
