Pascagoula keeps winning under new head coach Lorenzo Wright

PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - The Pascagoula Panthers enjoyed loads of success under head coach Ron Norman, three straight trips to the Class 5A state basketball playoffs.

During the summer, Norman stepped down from Pascagoula to become head coach at Meridian High School.

Following a coaching search, the Pascagoula-Gautier School Board approved the hiring of Lorenzo Wright in July after serving three seasons at D'Iberville and leading the Warriors to 19 wins, 12 losses, and a trip to the Class 6A state playoffs last season.

After 15 games, coach Wright has picked up from where coach Norman left off, guiding Pascagoula to 11 wins and 4 losses.

Wright said, "Just trying to learn the guys.  We're still in a learning process.  So far, I like what I see out of the guys. It's just been about putting in my system and working through the process."

Senior Noel Jones is an effective and intense basketball player.  A word that best describes Jones, he's electric.  Noel leads the Panthers, bagging 14 points, 5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 3 steals per game.   Besides Jones...Wright says younger players, sophomores and juniors have been consistent performers.

Coach Wright said, "No. 12 Daquan Weatherspoon, he's a junior along with Eric Smith No. 14 and also Jay McCorvey.  We're young, but I think we're going to be pretty good."

Pascagoula gave top-ranked Meridian and former head coach Ron Norman a tough challenge.  The 15 and 1 Wildcats  had to hold off the Panthers before pulling out a 53-48 victory at the Gulfport Hardwood Holiday Classic last week.
