GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - With 2017 just hours away, many people plan to celebrate with fireworks.
However, if used the wrong way, the pops, bangs and sparkles can be dangerous.
"One of our fears is when it's raining that people will come up with the bright idea that they can go under their carport and set off all these fireworks off. You can set the house on fire doing that," said Harrison County Fire Chief Pat Sullivan.
Sullivan offers the following tips to stay safe:
- Use common sense
- Never leave fireworks in the hands of a minor
- Use a location that's firework safe, and an open space
- Use caution
"Over the past several years we have had serious injuries from fireworks. We've had some people that have had he fire works explode in their hand, causing lost of digits and having to have surgery on their hands," said Chief Sullivan.
As a reminder, fireworks are generally not allowed within city limits. For a list of New Year's Eve fireworks shows, click here.
