New Apartment Are A Good Sign For Hancock County Economy

The Waverly Apartment complex is the newest to open in Hancock County. The complex is located on Old Nicholson Road just off of Highway 603.

"It's close to Stennis Space Center, the casinos and the Interstate, and a lot of people like to live close to the interstate," property manager Stacey Netto said.

Newer apartments with country club-like amenities offer the kind of atmosphere realtors say will help attract new residents to the county. An expansion of high-tech jobs at Stennis Space Center in the coming months is expected to bring nearly 600 more people to the area.

"A lot of times, when you move here you're not sure if you want to live in Diamondhead, Bay St. Louis, Picayune or Slidell," real estate agent Bobbye Boyd Staehle said. "As long as we have the apartments here, rather than Slidell having the apartments, then they'll have the tendency to stay here, and that's what we want."

Staehle says after a couple of years, apartment renters usually buy homes in the area.

"We diffidently needed it," Staehle said. "We needed an upscale apartment complex. We are expecting a lot of new people moving into the area. Before, when Casino Magic came, we were desperately trying to find people places to live. Right now we've got vacancies. I think we're prepared, and we'll be ready."
