GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Progress is being made at the Gulfport Sportsplex on an $8 million expansion.
Officials hope the upgrades will help increase the amount of money the city sees from use of the tournament fields north of I-10.
Mayor Billy Hewes says the dirt work on the expansion is nearly complete. Once it's finished, the artificial turf will be put in place.
Hewes says an already big economic impact should only grow with the ability to bring in more teams to the area.
"Right now, today, this is before the expansion, is over $10 million in economic impact. We host over 2,000 teams a year. Again, that's without the expansion, so there's still a lot of opportunity for us," said Hewes. "We'll probably see it in about a year, with them booking tournaments about a year in advance.
The fields are expected to be competition ready by 2018.
