Southern Miss signs pair of junior college transfers

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The University of Southern Mississippi signed a pair of Mississippi junior college football players to letters-of-intent Wednesday, the opening day of the early signing period for mid-semester transfers.

Defensive tackle Delmond Landry of Southwest Mississippi Community College and receiver Trevor Terry of Jones County Junior College are expected to enroll at USM in January and take part in spring practice.

“We are excited to have Delmond and Trevor join the Southern Miss football family,” USM coach Jay Hopson said. “We look forward to them coming in to join us for the 2017 season.”

The 6-foot-3, 290-pound Landry finished with 44 tackles (26 solo) this fall, with five tackles for loss, including a sack. He also had a pass breakup.

As a freshman, he made 36 tackles including a sack.

 A Donaldsonville, La., native, Landry earned all-metro and Class 1A all-state honors in both football and basketball for Ascension Catholic High School.

In football, he had 73 tackles, with 36 tackles for loss, including 21 sacks, and was voted District 8-1A Most Valuable Player after helping ACHS to the playoffs.

In basketball, Landry averaged 23.7 points, 17.5 rebounds and 3.8 blocked shots, helping ACHS to the playoffs.

The 6-1, 185-pound Terry will have three years of eligibility. In his lone season as a Bobcat, he ranked second the team with 16 catches for 217 yards and a touchdown, with a long catch of 53 yards.

He earned Region 4-5A and Class 5A all-state honors as a senior at Long Beach High School after catching 62 passes for 1,234 yards and 12 touchdowns.

As a junior, Terry had 46 catches for 640 yards and six touchdowns.
