BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Discussions and disagreements about regulating oyster season and the shrimp industry highlighted Tuesday's meeting of the Mississippi Commission on Marine Resources.
Despite the staff's recommendation that oyster season be shut down, commissioners voted to approve a five-day dredging season before Christmas, beginning Dec. 15. This excludes the area around St. Joe Reef.
Tonging will be allowed until the end of February but will rotate between the western sound and Biloxi Bay.
The staff's recommendation that the CMR form a shrimp task force was also rejected. Chairman Richard Gollott spoke against the idea, saying it was simply "another bureaucracy."
Commissioner Steve Bosarge argued for the task force creation, pointing to the success of the CMR's crab task force.
