GEORGE COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

It's an award that proves you don't have to be big to be great. The Mississippi Rural Health Association has just named George County Hospital the best small rural hospital in Mississippi.

"It's what everybody is working for here," Chief of Staff Dr. Jay Pinkerton said. "It's based upon quality metrics, It's quality of care and that's what you're trying to do on a daily basis. Provide the best possible are you can to all the patients."

Hospital CEO Greg Havard said the entire staff is proud of the accomplishment. He also points out that it's not just doctors and nurses who make up a hospital. The entire team consists of every specialty, including meal preparation, housekeeping and maintenance.

"We work hard to make sure that everyone knows that everything they do is instrumental in the overall care that we deliver to patients. So every person we have here is very instrumental in making this successful for us," Havard said.

That includes food service workers like executive chef Drake Stone, and those who work in the kitchen.

"We take pride in our work. We put our heart and soul into everything that we do. And we know that proper nutrition is a big part of the healing process," Stone said.

The honor sends an important message for the people of George County, and nearby towns, according to Director of Nursing Tabatha Pinter.

"I hope that people realize that we have great care we provide right here at home. You can just come right down the street and receive excellent health care at our facility," Pinter said.

Now understandably, the staff at George County hospital is very proud of what they've accomplished, being named the best rural hospital in the state.  But for the patients, perhaps that's even more important. That includes Jessica Littlefield, surrounded by family, about to have her second child.

"I'm very pleased with the care here. I wouldn't want to go any other hospital. I had my other one here and so I'm very pleased," Littlefield said.

George County hospital employs a staff of 306 people.
