BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Feet were definitely in motion for the 5K kick-off for the Inaugural Mississippi Gulf Coast Marathon.

Hundreds of people gathered at Point Cadet Plaza on Saturday to be the first to hit the ground running.

"We're just out here trying to support the event, we know it's the inaugural one on the Gulf Coast. We're glad that they got the event organized," said runner, Brian Sawyers.

With the marathon gearing up to be a top attraction of the Coast, many runners came from all over to join; even Janet Vann who came from Madison, Miss.

"I've been running for almost four years, and have lost count of the number of marathons and half marathons and 5K's. This is great, a new race for us to build a family tradition every year." said Vann.

The marathon will feature something for everyone, which many are hoping will attract more to the Coast during a time of rebuilding.

"I think there still some lingering concerns about Katrina damage, but it looks like the Gulf Coast has bounced back big time." said Vann.

The Mississippi Gulf Coast Full and Half Marathon will start Sunday at 7 a.m. Click here for race details.

The state flag controversy isn't going away anytime soon in Biloxi. While everyone from the mayor to visitors from out of town took turns speaking out at Tuesday's city council meeting about why the flag should or shouldn't fly, nothing has changed.
