SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - It will definitely feel like December as a blast of cold air arrives on Thursday in the southeast region.
Jack Frost will be nipping at the nose of many South Mississippians with a light morning freeze expected across the entire WLOX area on Friday and Saturday.
Here's the timeline:
Thursday: windy and chilly conditions arrive across the region. Afternoon highs will only warm into the 50s; wind chill in the mid 40s to lower 50s.
Thursday night: a light freeze is expected across the entire WLOX area late Thursday into early Friday. Temperatures will fall into the lower 30s and upper 20s. When you factor in the strong breeze, it'll actually feel like the mid 20s at times.
Friday: afternoon temperatures will only warm to the upper 40s with plenty of sun; wind chill in the mid to lower 40s.
Friday night: we'll see another freeze late Friday into early Saturday. Due to calmer and clearer conditions, this freeze could potentially be colder for some. Temperatures should chill into the mid to upper 20s north of I-10. For areas near and south of I-10, lower 30s and upper 20s are expected. Factoring in the breeze, most areas will feel as cold as the mid 20s during the early morning hours.
"Be sure to protect pets, plants, and people both nights," WLOX First Alert Meteorologist Wesley Williams advised. "And keep in mind that because parts of the WLOX area have already experienced their first few freezes this cold season, a cold weather alert may not be issued. Don't let your guard down. It'll still be cold enough to harm outdoor pets and plants both nights."
"Some inland areas in South Mississippi will come close to having a hard freeze for a short period of time early Saturday morning," continued Williams. "While it definitely won't be a pipes freeze south of I-10, the current forecast suggests it should also not be cold enough for long enough to bother most pipes north of I-10. Monitor the latest forecasts for any changes."
The weather pattern brings a bit of a warm up later this weekend thanks to southerly wind bringing near-normal temperatures. A less powerful cold front arrives early next week.
