There was a poignant reminder in Gulfport today of just how dangerous it is to be a police officer.
The city held its annual memorial to honor the officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the citizens of Gulfport. The brief ceremony included the placing of a wreath at the Gulfport Police Memorial Monument.
Among those speaking at todays event was Gulfport Police Chief Wayne Payne. Payne says people all over America should never forget about the sacrifices police officers make on a daily basis.
"Everyday these men and women leave their homes, and it could be for the last time," Chief Payne said. "We are certainly grateful we have men and women in our society who pick up this challenge and take it."
In the city of Gulfport, seven officers have lost their lives in the line of duty. Nationwide, that number tops 15,000.
