(Undated-AP) -- Mississippi is the home of six Blue Ribbon schools.
The US Department of Education has given the Blue Ribbon Schools Award to three elementaries in Tupelo and three on the Gulf Coast. They are among 264 schools selected nationwide.
Congressman Roger Wicker says the awards are among the most prestigious a school can earn at the national level. Wicker says the honor is given to schools based on the quality of leadership, teaching, curriculum and learning environment.
The state's winners are Thomas Street Elementary, Rankin Elementary and Church Street Elementary in Tupelo. The other schools are Magnolia Park Elementary and N.E. Taconi Elementary, both in Ocean Springs; and Thomas Reeves Elementary in Long Beach.
