GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The Humane Society of South Mississippi had its 8th annual Holiday Open House on Sunday, and there was a big line for a little face time with Santa.
But for others, it was time to check out of the hotel.
"She's just a beautiful dog, and friendly," said Kennith Clements of Biloxi.
Clements was one of many who took advantage of the 50 percent off adoption special.
"I actually haven't had a pet now for 35 years," Clements said. "I've been wanting one for a while as a companion. I live alone now. It's something to help keep me....me some company."
While there are many pets available, Clements chose Dutchess, who has heart worms.
"It took a minute or so, but I was able to reach over and pet her," said Clements. "And as soon as I started petting her, it was like she just melted."
Kim Yancey of Gulfport brought her two dogs for a visit and now, she's leaving with three.
"Just wanted to come to the open house and get a picture with Santa, and then we saw Randy here and she looked really said and she liked our dogs," said Yancey. "It's just nice to bring them home."
The why for her is simple.
"Cause they want homes, and I can give it to them, so why not," Yancey added.
Children also decorated stockings to hang on the kennels to be stuffed with treats. For the humans: sweet refreshments. For the pets: microchips and rabies vaccinations.
"It's just a heartwarming, a special feeling especially around this time of year just giving these dogs a loving home and getting them out of the shelter just in time for the holiday season. It's very special," noted Katie King with HSSM.
Proceeds to go the Have a Heart fund that provides heartworm treatment for the shelter animals. Additionally, the shelter is in need of standard provisions, as well as more blankets for cold nights.
