GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

In 2017 Mississippi will be celebrating its 200th birthday, and the state plans to go all out to celebrate.

Gulfport, Oxford, and Jackson have been selected to host major events, which will include a major series of concerts.

Federal, state, and local leaders and tourism forces are in the planning stages of putting together a big event at Centennial Plaza in Gulfport. The South Mississippi line up includes entertainment, exhibits, parades, and more.

The statewide salute begins on the Coast.

"We have three statewide concert celebrations planned in conjunction with Visit Mississippi and the Governor's office. The first will be here in Gulfport for South Mississippi on March 31, and April 1. It'll be a great way to kick off the events on the Gulf Coast," said Mary Margaret Miller with Visit Mississippi. .

Gulfport officials expect to book some well known entertainers to perform at Centennial Plaza. For more information, visit  www.ms200.org.
