Could Charlie Strong be a candidate to become Ole Miss defensive coordinator?

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Chuck Rounsaville of Scout.com reported that Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze is quickly looking for a new defensive coordinator.  He said coach Freeze wants to right the ship, recruit the right players and get back to moving in the right direction.

Two names that have been mention for the defensive coordinator position were former Texas head coach Charlie Strong and Auburn assistant coach Wesley McGriff.

Ole Miss fans may not remember, but Strong coached at Ole Miss during the 1990 season.  He previously served as defensive coordinator at Florida and South Carolina before he took over the head coaching job at Louisville.

McGriff served on the Ole Miss coaching staff in 2012.  He's the Auburn Tigers co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach.

You can throw in these names as well: Colorado defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt, Wake Forest defensive coordinator Mike Elko, and Indiana defensive coordinator Tom Allen.

Coach Freeze is trying to regroup his football program following a dismal 5 and 7 football season.

It doesn't help that the NCAA investigation continues to loom over the program and that hasn't helped in recruiting.

The humiliating 55-20 loss to Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl on Saturday in Oxford was a tough pill to swallow for Rebel fans.

Two years ago, Ole Miss was a prime time player in the national championship playoffs and now find themselves trying to get back on track.

True freshman quarterback Shea Patterson has loads of talent and he'll be a focal point next season in the hopes of Ole Miss becoming a contender in the SEC West Division.

Defense is a key element of success in the SEC and coach Freeze is on a mission to fortify the Ole Miss defense for the 2017 season.
