Poplarville Hornets aiming for 13th consecutive victory & it would produce the 4A State title

The Poplarville Hornets have flourished offensively and defensively in posting 12 consecutive wins.

On Friday, Poplarville jumped all over Florence early and led 28 to 7 at halftime before coasting under the win column to the tune of 42 to 14, claiming the 4A South State Championship title.

The March to Starkville has been accomplished.  The  4A South State Champion Hornets tackle the 12 and 2 Lafayette Commodores, the North State champs, 3 p.m. Saturday in on the campus of Mississippi State.

Head coach Jay Beech said, "We've got to finish the deal.  We've won 12 in a row, we might as well make ti 13 and we're going to prepare well and do our best."

Poplarville has a one-two punch at running back.  Austin Bolton and Jesse Pernell have combined for 3,315 yards rushing and 47 touchdowns.

Austin Arceneaux, number 59, is one of the linemen opening up the running lanes.  He's the starting left offensive guard.  Get this, he's stands 5'4" and weighs 175 pounds. No problem.

Arceneaux said, "There's a lot of trash talking out there."

He'll be trash talking with the likes of 220 and 230 pound defensive linemen on Saturday. Arceneaux says technique will off-set his lack of size in the trenches.

"Coach Beech does an excellent job coaching the offensive linemen, "said Arceneaux.  "He preaches technique and pad level."

There's a lot of heart on the Poplarville Hornets football team and that has led them to the title showdown in Starkville.

If you can make your way to Starkville, you can watch the Poplarville-Lafayette 4A State Title game live on WLOX-ABC beginning at 3 p.m.
