BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (WLOX) -

Competitors set out on Monday to put up the finest tree decorations for the first day of set up for the annual holiday tree gala.

The event is put on by the Hancock County Library.

Dianne Stechmann, a volunteer at Holy Trinity School, said each year she and the school's art teacher start brainstorming what they'll do for the gala during the summer. Students begin working on the decorations in October.

"By the weekend, this place will be loaded with trees," said Stechmann. "It's just gorgeous, especially Saturday night for benefactors they have a party, they dim the lights, they have food, they light all the trees, it's just spectacular."

Stechmann said community businesses, schools, and organizations can enter the contest. Voting for the best tree takes place on Sunday at 3 p.m.
