BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

A Biloxi man continues the wait for trial almost one year after reportedly shooting a Waffle House waitress.

Police say Julie Brightwell was gunned down in cold blood inside a Waffle House on Highway 90 in Biloxi on Nov. 27, 2015.

Investigators say Brightwell asked customer Johnny Mount to put out his lit cigarette. After refusing, Mount reportedly left the restaurant, got a gun from his car, then came back in and shot Brightwell in the head.

"Brightwell was shot once and taken to Merit Health where she died," said Sgt. Donnie Dobbs, Biloxi Police. "The suspect was arrested on the scene. When officers arrived, he was still on scene and was taken into custody."

Brightwell worked at Waffle House for eight years. Friends say customers adored her.

"I think everybody that knew her knew that she worked hard, she played hard. She loved to have a good time," said someone who knew Brightwell.

Mount is currently in the Harrison County jail charged with first degree murder. His trial is set for Feb. 13.
