JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The dreaded Flu season has creeped upon us. The first case of the flu in the state for 2016-17 was confirmed earlier this month.

Yes, It is flu season.

“It seems to come earlier and earlier every year, so you really never know.  We probably haven’t seen the largest part of the flu season so far. It might be before the New Year or might be right after,” Pharmacist Whitney Harris.

Over at Beemon Drugs in Jackson, more than 200 people have already rolled up their sleeves to get vaccinated this year .

"Vaccinations do not guarantee you're not get the flu 100 percent, but if you do get the flu and you got the vaccine usually your case is much less sever," said Harris.

The Center of Disease Control recommends that annual influenza vaccination's for everyone six months and  older. While some in the metro area agree it is better to be safe than sorry, others  prefer to take their chances.

“It would stop me from getting the flu and it stops other people from getting the flu, said a Jackson Resident.

“I never got the flu and I feel like if I get there is possibility I can get the flu. I don't know, it's just an old thing I heard, “ said another Jackson resident.

“A lot of people think you can get the flu from the vaccine, but you can't,” said Harris.

Harris said the peak time for flu season is usually from November to February. She said besides getting the annual flu vaccine, there are other ways you take action to prevent the flu.

“Washing your hands, staying clean and healthy, getting lots of rest, and staying away from those you know have the flu.”
