WIGGINS, MS (WLOX) - Stone High School and Middle School were placed on a precautionary lockdown Thursday after shots were fired during a fight near the school.
Wiggins Police Department Deputy Chief Jeff Thomas said no students were involved in the incident, and the precautionary lockdown was in place for campus safety.
Thomas said officers responded to a fight with shots fired near Auburn St. and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave. around 11 a.m.
One suspect was detained at the scene, and officers recovered a 9mm handgun. A second suspect, identified as Darius Young, ran before officers arrived. That's what caused the schools to be placed on lockdown.
No injuries were reported.
Detective Sgt. Richard Gulledge said Young was identified as the shooter. He was arrested about a mile from the scene after a block by block search of the area.
Gulledge said Young is on parole through the Mississippi Department of Corrections, and he removed his GPS monitor shortly after the shooting.
Young is charged with violating his parole. Gulledge said Wiggins police are still investigating the incident, and more charges could be coming.
