DIAMONDHEAD, MS (WLOX) - Early Sunday morning, Diamondhead United Methodist Church packed thousands of meals for starving people in foreign countries.
All hands were on deck as dozens of members filled the corridor of the church, packing hundreds of bags full of rice, soy, and dried vegetables. The food was provided by Stop Hunger Now, an organization dedicated to ending world hunger.
"We package these meals with volunteer groups and once we have enough meals for enough shipments, then we figure out where these meals are going to go," said Stop Hunger representative, Alex Fraser. "We believe the greatest need is abroad, so that's where we send the food."
Organizers say it's something they're proud to do.
"It is a huge undertaking for everyone's part, and as you can see, it incorporates all age groups in the church from our children all the way up to our older members," said Diamondhead United Methodist Church Youth Pastor, Ryan Keith,
More than 10,000 meals will be loaded into this truck, carefully packaged by Diamondhead United Methodist Church and Stop Hunger Now. Organizer say it's an awesome thing that the community could come together to help feed others.
"It's nice where you work a job really early in the morning and you're real tired, but the moment you come in the room and see all these people you get revitalized....you get energized because....they really want to make a difference," said Fraser.
The food will ship out to the local Stop World Hunger warehouse in Jackson.
