HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Attorney Jim Davis is asking for a new trial for former Hancock High girls basketball coach Leslie DeWitt. Last month, a judge ordered DeWitt to serve 30 years behind bars for what a jury deemed an inappropriate relationship with a student.
Monday, DeWitt's attorney said a member of that jury may not live in Hancock County, and Dewitt told the judge she felt the juror "gawked" at her during the trial. DeWitt was shackled and wearing an orange and white jumpsuit when she appeared before the judge.
Prosecuting attorneys say the information is not enough for a new trial.
The judge recessed court until Tuesday and said he will make a decision by 1:30 Tuesday afternoon. Davis has made it clear he will take this case to the state supreme court, if necessary.
