GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - After gaining national attention for suing Popeyes Chicken, a Gulfport attorney has dropped his lawsuit.

Paul Newton, Jr. filed a suit against the culinary giant after he says he choked on a piece of chicken because his meal did not include a plastic knife. Newton was asking to be compensated for medical expenses, pain and suffering, as well as punitive damage.

However, Newton filed to voluntarily dismiss his complaint on Nov. 3 after receiving numerous threats online. Derogatory comments include those from one Facebook user who stated, "You live in the south. How can you not know how to eat fried chicken without cutlery? Seriously dude."

Newton released the following statement to WLOX News Now:

"I continue to believe that the facts demonstrate an unsafe condition to the public that could easily be solved by the responsible parties at very little cost. I am hopeful that my filing of the court proceeding results in such remedial actions. However, due to extreme comments directed to me and my family, I have determined not to pursue this matter further."
