More than two years ago we were all happy to hear the announcement that Holiday Inn Resort would be the anchor tenant for the redevelopment of Centennial Plaza on Highway 90 in Gulfport. Holiday Inn would be the cornerstone for other businesses that would surely follow.
The announcement came for the old VA property. Then nothing happened. Expectations of breaking ground by the end of 2014 were quickly dashed as months rolled by and still no work appeared on the site.
But two years later, there is room for some optimism to trump skeptics who will believe it when they see it. Tax credits for the historic property are now in place and construction plans have been delivered to the city of Gulfport.
It is a long way between drawing plans and actually building a $17.5 million resort hotel. We hope it really happens.
We look forward to the day when this long talked about project is more than just talk, that day when the doors open and this project helps grow tourism on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
