SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) -

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality lifted a water contact advisory in the Mississippi Sound and issued another one Friday afternoon.

The waters off Shearwater Beach in Ocean Springs from Weeks Bayou east to Ashley Place are now safe for swimming again.

But MDEQ now says to avoid the waters off Pass Christian West Beach from Fort Henry Avenue east to Elliot Street. And the water contact advisory MDEQ issued Thursday for Gulfport Central Beach from Alfonso Drive east to Arkansas Avenue remains in effect.

MDEQ warns if you swim in the sections of the Mississippi Sound under water contact advisories, the current high bacteria levels mean you have a higher chance of getting sick.

MDEQ will these advisories when water samples show that bacteria levels are safe for human contact again.
