GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Dirt is being moved and the foundation for economic development is being put in place at Anchor Plaza in Gulfport.
Many say the development has great potential at the intersection of Landon Road and Highway 49.
"It's the second highest traffic count in the state of Mississippi. It's the hub of all of the commerce on the Gulf Coast and this is the last corner to be developed. What you see is the beginning of a very successful shopping area," said Gulfport Economic Development Director David Parker.
Two hotels are up and running, and a Buffalo Wild Wings and a Mugshots opened recently. There seems to be an emphasis on restaurants, with a popular steak house also coming to this location.
"We're going to have the first Texas Road House restaurant on the Coast. It's a great chain and they've been very picky about where they go. This is the second one in the state for them," Parker said.
However, moving traffic in and out of Anchor Plaza will be challenging. Gulfport is looking at creative ways to alleviate congestion.
"We're working with DOT for plans on easier access, we have a couple of tricks up our sleeve. We're looking at pressure valves so people can exit the area. We know it's a struggle because of the railroad tracks and the amount of traffic, but that's what is attracting development here as well," said Parker.
The expectation is the ribbon will be cut for the new Texas Road House restaurant in the summer of 2017.
