Business group unveils bicentennial banner

JACKSON, MS (WLOX) - A business group in Mississippi wants to celebrate the state's bicentennial in a special way. The Mississippi Economic Council unveiled a bicentennial banner at the organization's annual Hobnob.

MEC President Blake Wilson said the banner is intended to fly with the state flag, much like the banners flown across America when the country celebrated its bicentennial in 1976. Leaders hope to bring that same spirit to Mississippi for the state's bicentennial in 2017.

"It flew everywhere, and everybody just felt good about flying and celebrating our nation's bicentennial," said Wilson.

A Greenwood man designed the banner. It has three horizontal stripes: One red, one white, and one blue. A state seal is in the center. To the left of the seal are the words "Established 1817," and to the right are "Bicentennial 2017."

Right now, businesses that are members of the MEC can purchase the banner. It will be made in different sizes, so it can fly alongside the Mississippi and American flags, or underneath them.

The group hopes to make it available for all Mississippians to purchase for next year's bicentennial.
