SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - Mississippi Secretary of state Delbert Hosemann appears to be standing in the way of a plan for Margaritaville to develop vacant land for an amusement park. The reason? It's not a casino. The state stands to gain more tidelands land lease dollars from a casino than from a family oriented facility.
We agree with Biloxi Mayor FoFo Gilich who says in a letter to the Secretary of State, that we need more non-casino entertainment. Margaritaville's phase one has been drawing crowds since it opened in June with its indoor recreation for children and no casino.
This next phase is another step in reviving tourism on the coast for everyone, not just casino goers. The sticking point is whether the Secretary of state stays with a tidelands land lease rate for casinos or a much lower rate for family entertainment.
Growing this type of entertainment venue can only help tourism and the coast economy. That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to email@example.com.
