SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - School funding is a hot bed of controversy in our state. Now, state legislative leaders are moving to revamp the formula on funding for Mississippi Public Schools; hiring a New Jersey nonprofit firm to study the current formula and make recommendations.
A ballot issue which would have forced the legislature to fully fund the current plan failed at the polls last November. The next day, leaders started talking about changing the formula.
Now 11 months later comes a new study with changes expected in the legislature next year. Some people are skeptical fearing the outcome will be even less money for public schools.
We certainly understand the skepticism, but we agree that it is time to look at new funding formulas with a goal of putting more money in classrooms instead of additional administrative spending. We must do better in educating our young people for the future of our state.
