Friday Night Football Showdown/Week 10 Preview

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

The regular season in coming to a close and that means teams hungry to crack the playoffs must keep their winning ways alive.

Region 4-6A has three teams tied for the lead with 3 wins and 1 loss.  George County, St. Martin and D'Iberville all occupy the top spot with Biloxi, Harrison Central and Gulfport one game behind at 2 and 2.  Ocean Springs has posted one region win and Hancock is 0-4.

Tonight on the Friday Night Football Showdown Ocean Springs travels to St. Martin.  The Yellow Jackets are trying to secure their first playoff berth since 2003 and a win would solidify St. Martin's chances.

St. Martin quarterback Wayne Overman has passed for 2,407 yards with 30 touchdowns.  His favorite target is Kalem Reddix.  The senior wide receiver is second in the nation with 1,485 receiving yards on 66 catches and 19 touchdowns.

George County has the home field advantage hosting Biloxi.  The Red Rebels have the nation's 7th leading passer in LaRaymond Spivery.  The senior has 2,983 passing yards and 20 touchdowns.  Spivery can rely on a number of outstanding receivers with Tyrese Fryfogle have hauled-in 64 catches for 1.063 yards and 8 touchdowns.

Biloxi had won two straight games before dropping a 31-26 decision to St. Martin last Friday.  Quarterback Tucker Thomas is a threat running and passing the football.  He also has a top notch receiver in Tim Brown.

D'Iberville exploded against Hancock last week.  The Warriors defeated Hancock in the Kiln 63-7.  D'Iberville travels to Milner Stadium facing Gulfport.  Harrison Central upended the Admirals last Friday 14-13.

The Red Rebels hope that the win over Gulfport will give them momentum against Hancock tonight on the road.  Senior running back Keon Moore leads the Harrison Central ground attack with 1,131 yards.  Quarterback Tavis Williams is a highly capable rusher and can sling the football.  

Hancock quarterback Steven Good is a very good passer.  He has thrown for 1,242 yards and 8 touchdowns.

The Stone Tomcats traveled to Picayune last week and beat the previously unbeaten Maroon Tide 38-31 in double-overtime.  Stone running back Terrion Avery has exploded for 1,472 yards and should have another big night when the Tomcats travel to West Harrison.  Stone, Picayune, Hattiesburg and Pascagoula all share the Region 4-5A lead atop the standings.

Hattiesburg travels to Gautier.  The Gators are 2 and 2 in the Region 4-5A standings and face a stiff challenge tonight at home.

Picayune is on the road at Long Beach.  The Maroon Tide hope to roll back under the win column and tackle 0-4 Long Beach.  Coach Dodd Lee won't take the Bearcats lightly because Long Beach head coach Forrest Williams is capable of getting his players to respond positively against a talented Picayune football team.

Pearl River Central and Pascagoula clash in another Region 4-5A game at War Memorial Stadium.  The Blue Devils are 2 and 2 in the region race, while the Panthers are 3 and 1.

St. Stanislaus can wrap-up the Region 8-4A championship with a win at Moss Point.  Next week, the regular season comes to an end.  Rockachaws quarterback Myles Brennan ranked 15th in the latest MaxPreps.com national passing stats.  He has thrown for 2,707 yards, 34 touchdowns and no interceptions, leading the 3-0 Rockachaws offensively.

The 2 and 1 Tigers will face a trio of solid receivers in Corbin Blanchard, Chase Rogers and Darrius Pittman.

East Central has posted 2 wins and 1 loss in the Region 8-4A ranks.  The Hornets were outscored by St. Stanislaus 70 to 50 last Friday.  East Central has the home field advantage hosting Bay High.  Hornets running back Tony Brown leads the nation with 2,491 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns.

Vancleave travels to Pass Christian.  The Bulldogs and Pirates are both fighting for the fourth and final playoff slot.  Vancleave and Pass Christian are 1 and 2 in the region standings.

Poplarville leads the Region 7-4A standings with 3 wins and 0 losses.  Purvis is 3 and 0.  The Hornets battled Purvis tonight on the road.

Resurrection shares the Region 4-1A lead with Lumberton.  Both teams are 3-0.  The Eagles are on the road at 0-4 Bogue Chitto.

In other games St. Patrick travels to Collins in a Region 8-3A clash. The Fighting Irish are in the hunt for their first win of the season.

In eight-man football, Christian Collegiate Academy entertains Rebul Academy in Gulfport.
