PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - A Pascagoula convenience store clerk shot in the back during a robbery posted a Facebook message telling friends, "I'm still here! I LOVE YALL." The upbeat Facebook post also thanks friends for support and prayers.
Daphne Collins, 39, of Pascagoula remains hospitalized in New Orleans after being shot by someone trying to rob the Murphy Express on Chicot St. where she was working the overnight shift Thursday.
Pascagoula police are following leads to locate the suspect, but so far have not made an arrest.
Lt. Doug Adams, with the Pascagoula Police Department, said a family member told investigators a bullet is lodged near Collins' spine, and doctors are working to determine the next step.
Police say armed robberies of convenience store happen occasionally, but thankfully Adams says gunfire is rare.
"This is the first time we've had convenience clerk shot during an armed robbery since the middle 90s," Adams said.
Investigators have received several calls from people who saw the store surveillance pictures offering tips that could help identify the suspect. Investigators are checking surveillance video from other businesses near the store.
Adams said officers are trained to patrol night businesses often.
"People think we're just stopping in for coffee or a bottle of water, and we do, but we check also check on the clerks, and if something doesn't look right we'll go in," Adams said.
