GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Thursday was a first for Gulfport. It was the first picnic sponsored by the city - for the city.

All of the nearly 600 city employees, including first responders and their families, were invited to the picnic at Barksdale Pavilion in Jones Park. They enjoyed all the fare of a picnic: hamburgers, hot dogs and baked beans with beautiful weather as the backdrop.

Extras included music and a bounce house for kids. The event was put on by the administration and city council simply to say thank you for the work employees do every day.

“You know, you’re not able to give raises every year,” said Dr. John Kelly, Gulfport CAO. “But sometimes, raises are not the most important thing. Small things like fixing a hamburger for them, and spending time with them, just letting them know you care about them.”
