GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

The United States Navy turned 241 years old on Thursday. The birthday was celebrated at the Seabee Base in Gulfport.

The United States commissioned the Navy in 1775.

During Thursday's ceremony at the Seabee Base, Commanding Officer Captain Cheryl M. Hansen used a sword to help cut the cake.

Hansen said this milestone is a good chance to remind people of just how prepared the Navy is.

"Today's Navy Sailors are tough, they're bold, they're ready and they train. Today's challenges are like none other and our Navy sailors are up to the challenge," said Hansen.

Next year the Seabee base will mark a major milestone, celebrating its 75th year in Gulfport.
