FEMA assesses flood damage in Nichols

MARION COUNTY, SC (WMBF) -  On Thursday, a team with FEMA rode into Nichols to look at the damage done by flooding. Their work will go towards providing information to the South Carolina Governor's Office about what needs to be done to help Marion County recover.

While President Barack Obama has approved federal public assistance for Marion County, that support only goes to other governmental agencies, according to Renee Bufalis with FEMA. It does not to individuals.

Thursday's assessments though done by FEMA will go towards hopefully influencing Governor Nikki Haley to ask for federal assistance for individual homeowners and renters.

Marion County EMS Director Joey Price says an estimated 200 people are having to stay in shelters. Officials say those people have plenty of water and food, but they are in need of clothes, diapers, and baby formula.
