GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A family in Gulfport is safe after their home caught fire early Sunday morning on Woodmont Drive.
The family told authorities they awoke to the smell of smoke and loud popping sounds. One of the residents saw a fire outside the home'ss back door and went back inside to wake up those who were still sleeping inside the home. The resident then called 911.
Officials say firefighters arrived minutes after the emergency call was received, shortly after 4 a.m. In the short period of time it took firefighters to get there, the fire had already spread to a SUV parked next to the home, fully engulfing it in flames.
According to Gulfport Fire officials, the fire extended into the home' attic and chimney. Firefighters were able to fully contain the blaze within 15 minutes.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Red Cross has been notified to assist the displaced residents.
