SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - Mississippi is languishing at or near the bottom of far too many lists when it comes to education achievement. Supporters of implementing a state run lottery with the revenue going to education got a brief moment of hope this week.
Governor Phil Bryant said he is willing to discuss creating a lottery for Mississippi. But in the same breath, he said he is opposed to dedicating the revenue for education or other specific areas. The Governor said he does not want school funding left to a game of chance.
If the state of Mississippi indeed decides to implement a lottery; and that's a big if; that doesn't mean the lottery has to be the only funding. Other states have had success with lottery funds and improved education.
Of course other school taxes will still exist. But this additional funding would be an opportunity to move our state up when it comes to education and possibly even give some relief to other school taxes.
If Mississippi decides to create a state lottery, the justification has to be education funding. That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to firstname.lastname@example.org.
