GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The annual flame throwing competition drew a large Cruisin' crowd in Gulfport Tuesday night. Spectators packed every level of the parking garage at Island View Casino to get a good look at the glowing hot rods.
"We have a great time, we come down here the last two years and we just come to get in the fire throwing contest. Everybody down here is so friendly," said driver Hubert Keller.
Keller, who is from Savannah, Georgia, was in the contest with his 1949 pick-up truck, which attracted nearly every eye.
"You have to put the gas in the exhaust system, then you have to have some way to light it back up, and you have to mix it with air. And the hard part is getting it mixed just right to make everything burn," said Keller.
As flames lit up the night sky, and the crowd cheered, it was clear everyone was having a good time. Two longtime Cruisin' participants we spoke with said they wouldn't miss it for the world, despite having recently suffered a great loss during the recent flooding in Louisiana.
"We just love being apart of this. We've been doing this for about 10 years now. Of course, this year we lost everything in the flood, so we weren't able to bring our car down this year, but we're still enjoying it." said Lisa Sterling.
"Anybody can do it, it's a lot of fun.. It's inexpensive... and you can have a lot of fun with it," said driver Pete Lowe.
Both drivers and spectators say they absolutely can't wait until next year.
