Major hurricane Matthew intensifies again

SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) -

Major hurricane Matthew has intensified to category four status with maximum winds of 140 mph.

A Hurricane Watch was in effect for Jamaica and a Tropical Storm Watch was in effect for Haiti, according to a Friday statement from the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

The official NHC forecast is still calling for Matthew to take a sharp right turn this weekend and then head northward toward Jamaica.

"We are noticing that the storm is beginning to slow its forward motion," WLOX First Alert Meteorologist Wesley Williams pointed out. "That's a good sign for the Gulf Coast as it means Matthew may be beginning to make that turn that we've all been waiting for this weekend." 

"Even though the models are pretty unanimous in agreement that Matthew should stay out of the Gulf, we will not let our guards down until it takes the turn and moves far enough away to not be considered a threat to the Gulf Coast," said Williams.
