The Friday Night Football Showdown will feature six local games beginning at 10:15 p.m. on WLOX ABC-CBS.
The home standing Gulfport Admirals take aim on back-to-back Region 4-6A victories following a thrilling double-overtime 42-35 win over St. Martin last week George County will serve as the opposition at Milner Stadium.
The Rebels suffered a tough 56-52 overtime loss to Harrison Central.
The Admirals are known for defense and the Rebels will test the Gulfport defenders beginning Friday night at 7. Rebels quarterback LaRaymond Spivery ranks 7th in the MaxPreps national passing statistics. Spivery has completed 71 percent of his passes for 2,061 yards, 14 touchdowns and 4 interceptions.
Gulfport relies on the run. Larozzo Shugart leads the Admirals ground attack with 285 yards and 3 touchdowns. He's netting 7.9 yards per carry.
D'Iberville and Ocean Springs hook-up in Jackson County. The Warriors under first-year head coach Eric Collins knocked-off rival Biloxi 37-13 last Friday. Ocean Springs scored a touchdown with 9 seconds remaining in the game and bagged a two-point conversion to upend Hancock 20-19.
The Warriors have a solid running game. In the win over the Indians, D'Iberville fullback Micah "18 Wheeler" Booker powered his way for 152 yards and four touchdowns. The Ocean Springs defense can't just key on the 18 Wheeler, Ja'Quavis Foster and Kahlil McCray are both hard-nosed running backs. Foster is averaging 8.0 yards a carry and McCray just over 7 yards.
Ocean Springs plays outstanding defense and no doubt will be tested on Friday. Offensively, wide receiver Austin Williams is a game changer for the Greyhounds. He has 17 receptions for 331 yards and 6 touchdowns. He's averaging 19.3 yards per catch.
The Biloxi at Harrison Central Region 4-6A confrontation will be another featured game on the Friday Night Football Showdown. The Indians opened Region play last week by dropping a 37-13 decision to D'Iberville. Indians quarterback Tucker Thomas has passed for 543 yards with 5 touchdowns. He's also Biloxi's leading rusher with 314 yards and two touchdowns.
The Red Rebels are led by senior quarterback Tavis Williams. He has 430 yards passing and 6 touchdowns and if a receiver isn't open, Williams can tuck the ball in and take off. Tavis has 527 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns.
Region 4-5A opens play Friday night. The East Central Hornets will be on the road at Moss Point. The game will be highlighted on the Friday Night Football Showdown.
Hornets running back Tony Brown is the nation's leading rusher with 1,687 yards. He's averaging 9.1 yards per carry and has cracked the end zone 18 times.
Moss Point has a top notch running back Omni Wells. He can take off for the end zone at any given time.
The Friday Night Football Showdown crew will also capture highlights from the Bay High at Pass Christian Region 8-4A clash. The Tigers from the Bay have two solid running backs in Vernon Barnes and Jaylan Wilson. Barnes has 527 yards rushing with 8 touchdowns on the season. Wilson has exploded for 560 yards and 7 touchdowns. He has averaged 9.5 yards a carry.
The Pirates from the Pass can also run the football. V.J. Swanier has been Pass Christian's horse. He's averaged 10 yards carry. Swanier has 751 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns.
The Pascagoula Panthers will be on the road Friday night in Perkinston. The Panthers tackle the Stone Tomcats on the campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
The Tomcats defense must contend with a Panther duo at running back. Reginald Hunter has 329 yards rushing with 4 touchdowns and Jarvarous Walker has run up 402 yards on the ground with 3 touchdowns.
The Pascagoula defense will face a game changer in running back Terrion Avery. He's already surpassed a 1,000 yards rushing with 12 touchdowns.
