BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

The voter base is expanding at St. Patrick High School in Biloxi all because of an effort by a retired Navy commander.

Finley Hewes hosted Cmdr. Christy Wheeler in his government classes at the high school to get eligible students registered to vote in time for this year's elections. Wheeler is also the second vice president of voter registration with the League of Women Voters.

“It's to get them engaged in the process. This is something that I feel is not just a right. It's a responsibility,” said Wheeler. “We have to understand what the election process is all about. That's what they're learning here in school. But when they also have a feel or a connection to it that they can get from an outside party, it really helps.

Wheeler’s efforts will help register students all throughout the day at the high school to vote and possibly become poll workers. She said it's important for the students to understand their voice in our democracy.

Full-time Waveland city workers, primarily police officers, who take-home vehicles outside of the city limits could see a change to the city's policy soon. City leaders said the current policy is antiquated and needs to be rewritten into something that would benefit both the officers and the taxpayers.
