BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

These days, there are a lot of potholes in east Biloxi these days. Some are really big, but one on Nixon Street is actually a sinkhole.

The earth swallowed up a large segment of Nixon Street in the 700 block around 9am Tuesday morning. The hole was at least six feet in diameter, and six feet deep.

Anita Averhart was bringing in her trash cans and noticed the gaping hole. She quickly realized it could become dangerous for a child walking down the street, or even a car. So she picked up the phone and called the city of Biloxi.

Within about 15 minutes, an emergency road crew was on the scene. The workers first filled in the hole with two huge loads of sand, followed by a topping of gravel. This repair is considered temporary, since Nixon Street is part of a $120 million East Biloxi infrastructure improvement program. Permanent repairs will be made when Nixon street is completely rebuilt and overlaid with a new layer of asphalt.
