The quest to crack the high school football playoffs begins in earnest for teams competing in the Class 6A and Class 5A ranks tonight at 7:00.
The 3 and 2 Gulfport Admirals travel to 3 and 2 St. Martin in a Region 4-6A Friday Night Football Showdown. While the Admirals had a bye-week, the Yellow Jackets were involved in a track meet last Friday. St. Martin outscored East Central 63-55.
St. Martin quarterback Wayne Overman passed for 341 yards and tossed seven touchdown passes. His favorite target Kalem Reddix snagged 15 passes and six of those were touchdowns.
The Admirals will try bouncing back under the win column following a 25-7 loss to Picayune two weeks ago.
Another exciting Friday Night Football Showdown sends the Biloxi Indians on the road at rival D'Iberville. The home standing Warriors are going after a fifth straight win over Biloxi. In this Region 4-6A clash, the Warriors under first-year head coach Eric Collins are looking to rebound after St. Stanislaus shot down D'Iberville 40 to 14 last week. The Indians had a bye-week.
In another Region 4-6A confrontation, Ocean Springs and Hancock will hook up in the Kiln. The 3 and 1 Greyhounds defense came up big last Friday in shutting down the Murrah Mustangs 20-0. The 3 and 1 Hawks had an open date.
For the second week in a row, Long Beach travels to Jackson County. Last week the 2 and 3 Bearcats rallied for a come-from-behind 20-19 win over Moss Point. Long Beach battles the Pascagoula Panthers at War Memorial Stadium. The Panthers beat the George County Rebels 36-29 one week ago. This is the Region 4-5A opener for both teams.
West Harrison closed out non-district play with 1 win and 3 losses. The home standing Hurricanes face Region 4-5A contender Hattiesburg.
The final Friday Night Football Showdown game that will be featured tonight on WLOX ABC-CBS at 10:15 sends the 2 and 2 Blue Devils from Pearl River Central facing the 3 and 1 Stone Tomcats on the campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. This is another Region 4-5A game with every team trying to begin the race for the playoffs with a big win.
