PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) - Development of downtown Pass Christian continues with another hotel. A groundbreaking took place Thursday for the 81-room Hampton Inn.
The new hotel will be located at the corner of Market Street and Scenic Drive. The two-acre site is now a vacant lot.
"The city was very interested in having a hotel as an anchor for the community or the business community," said hotel co-owner William Jeans. "We wanted to try and do something to help the community because if you remember we lost two-thirds of our population in Pass Christian and it needed a worthwhile commercial development."
Pass Christian Mayor Chipper McDermott says this is a project four years in the making, and this is one of the biggest developments in the history of the city.
"I think this Hampton Inn on this corner that has been and probably would have stayed dormant for a while, I think it is the project that will stir the drink to make things happen here," said McDermott. "If we can get this to stimulate that, then we're back even further than we were before the hurricane."
It's been almost a century since Pass Christian has had a hotel of any kind. Now in the next few months, two boutique hotels are set to open and then in late 2017 construction of the Hampton Inn is expected to be finished.
Mayor McDermott says the city and county provided tif bonds to help the hotel project.
