East Central running back Tony Brown is making headlines, national headlines. The 5-foot-9, 170 pound junior leads the nation with 1,394 rushing yards, netting 9.6 yards a carry and has 14 touchdowns.
In a loss... a 63-55 setback to St. Martin, Brown kept stinging the Yellow Jackets defense bursting loose for 401 yards rushing and bagged 3 touchdowns. Brown kept the Hornets (3-2) within striking distance.
Tony Brown is the WLOX High School Football Player of the Week.
Brown said, "I just follow by blockers. I've got a great offensive line in front of me. Most of the time I just follow them, make D-cuts, make good decisions and break free."
East Central head coach Seth Smith said, "We've been very fortunate to coach some really good football players and he's one of the best ones we've coached. He embodies everything we want in a football player, great kid, hard worker and he has ability.
Last season Brown carried the ball 10 times for 111 yards and a touchdown. He played behind A.J. Davis who exploded for 2,893 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2015. Davis is now a member of the East Central Community College football team.
Brown is on pace to surpass the single season Hornets rushing record held by Davis.
"The thing that's a little different about Tony, he's got 4.4, 4.5 speed, "stated Smith. "So, he can break the first, second level and score."
Brown and his East Central teammates travel to Purvis Friday night. The Hornets kick off Region 8-4A play on September 30 at Moss Point.
